นี่ / นั่น / โน่น

“This / that / that over there” as pronouns

Structure โครงสร้าง

  • นี่ + (คือ / เป็น) + N (this is …)
  • นั่น / โน่น + (คือ / เป็น) + N (that is … / that over there is …)
  • นี่ / นั่น + อะไร ? (what’s this / that?)

Usage การใช้

นี่, นั่น, โน่น are demonstrative pronouns: they stand alone for ‘this (near me)’, ‘that (near you / not far)’ and ‘that over there (far away)’.

In speech, คือ is often dropped: นี่อะไร ‘What’s this?’ นี่ at the start of a sentence can also attract attention: นี่ ฟังก่อน ‘Hey, listen.’

Examples ตัวอย่างประโยค

  1. นี่อะไร
    What’s this?
  2. นี่คือเพื่อนผม ชื่อเจมส์
    This is my friend James.
  3. นั่นร้านอะไร
    What shop is that?
  4. โน่นไง วัดที่ผมพูดถึง
Over there, that’s the temple I mentioned.

Subtle differences ข้อสังเกต

นี่ / นั่น / โน่น (with falling-tone vowels) stand alone as pronouns. นี้ / นั้น / โน้น (TG035) come after a noun as modifiers.

✗ Unnatural: นี้อะไร

✓ Use instead: นี่อะไร (What’s this?)

Why: Standing alone, ‘this’ is นี่. นี้ must follow a noun (อันนี้, คนนี้).
