Location words

“In, on, under, beside, in front, behind, between, near”

Structure โครงสร้าง

  • (อยู่) + ใน / บน / ใต้ / ข้าง / หน้า / หลัง + N
  • ระหว่าง + A + กับ + B (between)
  • ใกล้ + N (near)

Usage การใช้

These words give exact position. They come directly before the noun, usually after อยู่ ‘be located’. หน้า and หลัง can also be said ข้างหน้า / ข้างหลัง when no noun follows: อยู่ข้างหลัง ‘it’s behind’.

Examples ตัวอย่างประโยค

  1. แมวอยู่ใต้โต๊ะ
The cat is under the table.
  2. กุญแจอยู่บนตู้เย็น
The key is on the fridge.
  3. ร้านอยู่ระหว่างธนาคารกับโรงแรม
The shop is between the bank and the hotel.
  4. รอผมหน้าห้องนะ
Wait for me in front of the room.

Subtle differences ข้อสังเกต

✗ Unnatural: แมวอยู่ข้างใต้

✓ Use instead: แมวอยู่ข้างล่าง / แมวอยู่ใต้โต๊ะ (The cat is underneath / under the table.)

Why: Without a noun, ‘under’ is ข้างล่าง, not ข้างใต้ alone. ใต้ needs a noun after it.

  • ข้าง alone means ‘beside’ (ข้างบ้าน ‘next to the house’); ข้างใน, ข้างนอก, ข้างบน, ข้างล่าง are the forms without a noun.
