Resultative verbs: V + (ไม่) + result
A second verb shows whether the attempt succeeded; ไม่ goes between the two verbs
Structure โครงสร้าง
- V1 + V2(result) (succeeded)
- V1 + ไม่ + V2(result) (tried but failed)
- V1 + V2 + ได้ไหม / V1 + ไม่ + V2 + เหรอ (questions)
Usage การใช้
Many Thai actions come in pairs: an attempt verb and a result verb. ดู ‘look’ + เห็น ‘see’, ฟัง ‘listen’ + ได้ยิน ‘hear’, หา ‘look for’ + เจอ ‘find’, นอน ‘lie down’ + หลับ ‘fall asleep’. To say the attempt failed, put ไม่ between the two verbs.
Examples ตัวอย่างประโยค
- ผมหาแว่นไม่เจอ
I can’t find my glasses. - เมื่อคืนนอนไม่หลับเลย
I couldn’t sleep at all last night. - พูดดัง ๆ หน่อย ฟังไม่ได้ยิน
Speak up, I can’t hear you. - มองจากตรงนี้ดูเห็นทะเลไหม
Can you see the sea from here?
Subtle differences ข้อสังเกต
✗ Unnatural: ผมไม่หาเจอแว่น
✓ Use instead: ผมหาแว่นไม่เจอ (I can’t find my glasses.)
Why: ไม่ goes between the two verbs, and the object goes after the first verb.
- ผมไม่ได้ยิน ‘I didn’t hear (it)’ is also natural; ฟังไม่ได้ยิน stresses that you were trying to listen.
