Question words as indefinites (อะไร / ใคร / ไหน)
In yes/no questions and negatives, question words mean “something / anyone / anywhere” rather than “what / who / where”
Structure โครงสร้าง
- มี + อะไร / ใคร + … + ไหม ? (is there anything / anyone …?)
- V + ที่ไหน / ไหน + ไหม ? (anywhere?)
- ไม่ + V + อะไร / ใคร (nothing / nobody)
Usage การใช้
In yes/no questions and negative sentences, Thai question words lose their question meaning and become indefinite: อะไร = something / anything, ใคร = someone / anyone, ที่ไหน = somewhere / anywhere.
Intonation and the particle at the end (ไหม, หรือเปล่า) show that it is a yes/no question rather than a ‘what?’ question.
Examples ตัวอย่างประโยค
- มีอะไรให้ช่วยไหมคะ
Is there anything I can help with? - มีใครอยู่บ้านไหม
Is anyone home? - วันหยุดนี้จะไปไหนหรือเปล่า
Are you going anywhere this holiday? - ผมไม่ได้กินอะไรเลย
I didn’t eat anything at all.
Subtle differences ข้อสังเกต
Compare: คุณกินอะไร ‘What are you eating?’ vs คุณกินอะไรหรือยัง ‘Have you eaten anything yet?’. The final particle decides the meaning.
