ยืม / ให้ยืม (borrow vs lend)
ยืม = borrow; “lend” is causative ให้ … ยืม (“let someone borrow”)
Structure
- S + ยืม + N + (จาก + person) (borrow)
N (May I borrow …?)
- S + ให้ + person + ยืม + N (lend)
Usage
ยืม means ‘borrow’. Thai has no separate verb for ‘lend’: it uses the causative ให้ (person) ยืม ‘let (someone) borrow’.
To ask politely:
Examples
Could I borrow a hundred baht? -
I borrowed this book from the library. -
My friend lent me his car. -
Could you lend me a pen?
Subtle differences
✗ Unnatural: เพื่อนยืมรถให้ผม (meaning ‘My friend lent me his car’)
(My friend lent me his car.)
Why: ‘Lend’ is ให้ + person + ยืม. ให้ means ‘borrow (from someone else) for me’.
