ขึ้น / ลง (change of state)
Increase vs decrease, improving vs declining
Structure โครงสร้าง
- Adj / V + ขึ้น (increase, get more …, better)
- Adj / V + ลง (decrease, get less …, worse)
Usage การใช้
After an adjective, ขึ้น (‘up’) shows an increase or an improvement, and ลง (‘down’) shows a decrease or a decline: ดีขึ้น ‘better’, ถูกลง ‘cheaper’, อ้วนขึ้น ‘fatter’, ผอมลง ‘thinner’.
Which one to use depends on the meaning: increases in size, quantity and quality take ขึ้น; reductions take ลง.
Examples ตัวอย่างประโยค
- อากาศเย็นลง
It’s getting cooler. - อาการดีขึ้นแล้ว
He’s getting better. - ราคาน้ำมันแพงขึ้นอีกแล้ว
Fuel prices have gone up again. - ช่วยพูดช้าลงหน่อยได้ไหม
Could you speak a bit more slowly?
Subtle differences ข้อสังเกต
Most adjectives naturally take one or the other: ร้อนขึ้น (hotter), ช้าลง (slower), เร็วขึ้น (faster), น้อยลง (less), มากขึ้น (more), ถูกลง (cheaper), แพงขึ้น (more expensive).
A few take both, with a small difference in viewpoint: อากาศเย็นลง (the heat is going down) and อากาศเย็นขึ้น (the coolness is increasing) both mean ‘it’s getting cooler’.
