Formal “to” (giving, offering)
Structure
- V + O + แก่ + person (to: formal)
- V + O + แด่ + revered person (to: very formal, respectful)
N (towards, to: formal)
Usage
These are formal words for ‘to’ after verbs of giving and presenting. แก่ is the neutral formal word, แด่ is used for monks, royalty, or people deeply respected, and ต่อ means ‘towards, regarding’ (ต่อสังคม ‘towards society’). In everyday speech, ให้ is used instead.
Examples
Present the prize to the winner. -
Offer food to the monks. -
We offer our condolences to the family of the deceased. -
Educate the public.
Subtle differences
✗ Unnatural: (to a friend)
(I’ll give you the money.)
Why: แก่ is formal and written. In speech, ให้ takes the person directly.
- แด่ for someone not especially revered sounds odd: use แก่ for ordinary formal settings.
