หน่อย

“A little”; softens requests to sound polite

Structure โครงสร้าง

  • V (+ O) + หน่อย (softened request)
  • ขอ + N + หน่อย (asking for something)
  • ช่วย + V + หน่อย (asking for help)
  • Adj + หน่อย (a bit more …: ‘เร็วหน่อย’)

Usage การใช้

After a request, หน่อย means literally ‘a little’, but its real job is to make the request polite and small, like English ‘please’ or ‘could you…?’. It is very common with ขอ (TG172) and ช่วย (TG173).

After an adjective in a request, it means ‘a bit more …’: เร็วหน่อย ‘a bit faster, please’, ถูกหน่อยได้ไหม ‘can you make it a bit cheaper?’

Examples ตัวอย่างประโยค

  1. ช่วยปิดประตูหน่อย
Could you close the door, please?
  2. ขอน้ำเปล่าหน่อยครับ
Could I have some water, please?
  3. พูดช้า ๆ หน่อยได้ไหมคะ
Could you speak a little more slowly?
  4. ลดราคาหน่อยได้ไหม
Can you lower the price a bit?

Subtle differences ข้อสังเกต

หน่อย vs นิดหน่อย (TG229): หน่อย after a request is just politeness; นิดหน่อย is a real ‘a little’ amount. ช่วยหน่อย = ‘Help me, please.’ ช่วยนิดหน่อย = ‘help a little (only partly)’.

หน่อย vs ด้วย (TG105): both soften requests. หน่อย makes the request sound small and easy; ด้วย adds ‘as well, please’ and can sound more urgent (ช่วยด้วย! ‘Help!’).
