ทำไม
“Why”. At the end of the sentence it asks for a purpose (ไปทำไม “What are you going for?”); at the start it asks for a reason or explanation (answered with เพราะ). It always comes first in negative questions
Structure โครงสร้าง
- ทำไม + clause ? (why …?)
- V + ทำไม ? (what for? what … for?)
- ทำไม + ไม่ + V ? (why don’t you …?)
Usage การใช้
ทำไม means ‘why’. At the start of the sentence it asks for a reason: ทำไมมาสาย ‘Why are you late?’ (answered with เพราะ, TG258).
At the end, after a verb, it asks about the purpose and can sound like ‘what for?’: ไปทำไม ‘What are you going there for?’. Depending on tone, this can sound like ‘there’s no point’.
Negative questions always put ทำไม first: ทำไมไม่บอก ‘Why didn’t you tell me?’
Examples ตัวอย่างประโยค
- ทำไมมาสาย
Why are you late? - ทำไมไม่บอกก่อน
Why didn’t you tell me earlier? - ไปกรุงเทพฯ ทำไม
What are you going to Bangkok for? - ซื้อมาทำไมเยอะแยะ
Why did you buy so much?
Subtle differences ข้อสังเกต
ทำไม at the end can sound critical, as if the action is pointless. To ask about a purpose neutrally, ทำไมถึง … or ไป … เพื่ออะไร is softer.
In a negative question, ทำไม normally comes first: ทำไมไม่มา ‘Why didn’t you come?’
