ก็ (overview)
Very versatile linker: “also”, “then/so”, “well…”, softener; links a clause to what came before
Structure โครงสร้าง
- (S) + ก็ + predicate: ก็ always stands just before the verb or predicate, after the subject
Usage การใช้
ก็ is one of the most frequent words in Thai and has no single translation. Its basic job is to link what follows to something said or implied before. The main uses are:
1) too / also: ผมก็ไป (TG303). 2) then (result after a condition): ถ้าว่างก็มา (TG305). 3) well… (softening or hesitation): ก็…ไม่แน่ใจ (TG307). 4) any- after question words: ใครก็ได้ (TG308). 5) fine / OK: ก็ได้ (TG306), ก็ดี (TG309). 6) parallel statements: บางคนก็…บางคนก็… (TG310). 7) justifying: ก็ + S + … + นี่ ‘well, because …!’
Whatever the meaning, the position is the same: after the subject, before the verb.
Examples ตัวอย่างประโยค
- ผมก็ไป
I’m going too. - ถ้าว่างก็มานะ
If you’re free, then come. - ก็… ไม่แน่ใจนะ
Well… I’m not sure. - ใครก็ทำได้
Anyone can do it. - ก็ผมไม่รู้นี่
Well, I didn’t know!
Subtle differences ข้อสังเกต
✗ Unnatural: พอถึงบ้าน ก็เขานอน
✓ Use instead: พอถึงบ้าน เขาก็นอน (As soon as he got home, he went to bed.)
Why: ก็ comes after the subject. ก็ + subject sounds like a justification (‘well, he …!’).
