เป็น
“To be” for roles, status, nationality, illness
Structure โครงสร้าง
- S + เป็น + N (role, job, nationality, relationship)
- S + เป็น + illness (TG031)
- S + ไม่ได้เป็น / ไม่ใช่ + N (negative)
Usage การใช้
เป็น links a subject to a noun that describes what the subject is: its job, role, nationality, relationship or category. เขาเป็นครู ‘She is a teacher.’
It is not used before adjectives (TG029).
Examples ตัวอย่างประโยค
- เขาเป็นครู
She is a teacher. - ผมเป็นคนอังกฤษ
I’m English. - เขาเป็นพี่สาวของฉัน
She’s my older sister. - ทุเรียนเป็นผลไม้ที่คนไทยชอบมาก
Durian is a fruit Thais love.
Subtle differences ข้อสังเกต
✗ Unnatural: ผมเป็นหิว
✓ Use instead: ผมหิว (I’m hungry.)
Why: Adjectives act as verbs in Thai. เป็น only links to nouns.
เป็น vs คือ (TG026): เป็น describes a role or category; คือ identifies or defines. นี่คือพ่อผม ‘This is my father’ (introducing), พ่อผมเป็นหมอ ‘My father is a doctor’ (his job).
