หรือ checks an assumption (“…, is it?”, “really?”) and is the normal form for negative questions; หรือเปล่า is a neutral “…or not?”, common for past actions (ไปหรือเปล่า “Did you go?”)
Structure
- statement + หรือเปล่า ? (… or not?)
- statement + หรือ ? (… is it? / so …?)
- negative statement + หรือ / เหรอ ? (isn’t it? don’t you?)
Usage
หรือเปล่า (literally ‘or not’) is a neutral yes/no question. It is the normal choice for checking facts, especially past actions: ไปหรือเปล่า ‘Did you go?’. In speech it often shrinks to รึเปล่า or ป่าว.
หรือ at the end (spoken เหรอ / หรอ, TG079) checks an assumption: ‘…, is it?’, ‘so you …?’. It is also the normal way to ask a negative question: ไม่ชอบหรือ ‘Don’t you like it?’
Examples
Did he come (or not)?
Are you Japanese? -
Don’t you eat spicy food? -
So you’re going with him?
Subtle differences
หรือเปล่า is neutral, while หรือ shows the speaker already has a guess (and is perhaps a bit surprised).
✗ Unnatural:
(Don’t you like it?)
Why: Negative questions take หรือ / เหรอ, not ไหม.
