Structure โครงสร้าง
- V + โดย + means (by, via)
- passive + โดย + agent (by someone: formal)
- โดย + V (by doing)
Usage การใช้
โดย means ‘by’. It marks the means of travel or method (เดินทางโดยรถไฟ) and, in formal writing, the agent of a passive (เขียนโดย ‘written by’). It is more formal than ด้วย or ทาง.

Generally the shop closes on Mondays.
Subtle differences ข้อสังเกต
- In speech, travel is usually นั่งรถไฟไป ‘go by train’ rather than เดินทางโดยรถไฟ, which sounds like a report.
✗ Unnatural: (to a friend) วันนี้มาโดยแท็กซี่
✓ Use instead: วันนี้นั่งแท็กซี่มา (I came by taxi today.)
Why: โดย sounds written or formal. In conversation, use นั่ง + vehicle + มา.
