และ / กับ / แล้วก็

“And” (และ formal; กับ for nouns; แล้วก็ in speech)

Structure โครงสร้าง

  • N + กับ + N (spoken, nouns only)
  • A, B และ C (formal; nouns, verbs or clauses)
  • A แล้วก็ B (spoken; nouns or clauses)

Usage การใช้

Thai has three common words for ‘and’, and they differ in register and in what they can join.

กับ joins nouns, especially people (ผมกับเพื่อน). It is everyday speech. It cannot join two verbs or two clauses. After a verb it means ‘with’: ไปกับเพื่อน.

และ is the neutral or formal ‘and’ used in writing, lists and careful speech. It can join nouns, adjectives, verbs and whole clauses. In a list it goes before the last item.

แล้วก็ is the spoken ‘and (also)’ for adding items or clauses. It also carries a sense of sequence (‘and then’, TG262).

Examples ตัวอย่างประโยค

  1. ผมกับเพื่อนไปดูหนัง
My friend and I went to see a film.
  2. ร้านนี้มีข้าวผัด ก๋วยเตี๋ยว และส้มตำ
This shop has fried rice, noodles and papaya salad.
  3. ซื้อนม แล้วก็ไข่มาด้วยนะ
Buy some milk, and eggs as well.
  4. เขาเก่งและขยัน
    He is smart and hard-working.

Subtle differences ข้อสังเกต

In casual speech two adjectives are often joined with no word at all, or with แล้วก็ … ด้วย: เขาเก่ง แล้วก็ขยันด้วย.

✗ Unnatural: ผมกินข้าวกับดูทีวี

✓ Use instead: ผมกินข้าวไปดูทีวีไป / ผมกินข้าวแล้วก็ดูทีวี (I ate while watching TV. / I ate and then watched TV.)

Why: กับ only joins nouns, not actions.

✗ Unnatural: ฝนตกกับรถติด

✓ Use instead: ฝนตกแล้วก็รถติดด้วย / ฝนตกและรถติด (It was raining and the traffic was bad.)

Why: Joining two clauses needs แล้วก็ (spoken) or และ (formal).
