กลับ (contrary to expectation)
“Instead, on the contrary”; the outcome is the opposite of what was expected
Structure โครงสร้าง
- clause, S + กลับ + V (instead, on the contrary)
- แทนที่จะ + V, S + กลับ + V
Usage การใช้
Placed before the verb of the second clause, กลับ signals that the outcome is the opposite of what was expected: ‘instead, actually, contrary to expectation’.
It is often paired with แทนที่จะ ‘instead of’.
Examples ตัวอย่างประโยค
- ฉันเตือนเขาดี ๆ เขากลับโกรธ
I warned him nicely, but instead he got angry. - กินยาแล้วอาการกลับแย่ลง
After taking the medicine, he actually got worse. - แทนที่จะขอโทษ เขากลับหัวเราะ
Instead of apologising, he laughed. - คนที่เรียนน้อยกลับสอบได้คะแนนดีกว่า
The one who studied less actually scored higher.
Subtle differences ข้อสังเกต
Do not confuse this with the verb กลับ ‘return’: เขากลับบ้าน ‘He went home.’ A phrase like เขากลับไม่ไป can only be the contrary meaning (‘yet he didn’t go’).
✗ Unnatural: เขาขยันเรียน เขากลับสอบผ่าน
✓ Use instead: เขาขยันเรียน เขาก็เลยสอบผ่าน (He studied hard, so he passed.)
Why: Passing is the expected result, so กลับ (contrary to expectation) makes no sense. Use ก็เลย for a normal result.
