ไม่
Basic negation, placed before the verb or adjective
Structure โครงสร้าง
- S + ไม่ + V (+ O)
- S + ไม่ + Adj
- S + ไม่ + modal (ไม่อยาก, ไม่ต้อง, ไม่ควร)
Usage การใช้
ไม่ is the basic ‘not’. It goes directly before the verb, adjective or modal it negates. Thai has no helper verb like English ‘do’: ‘I don’t eat’ is simply ผมไม่กิน.
With nouns and identity, Thai uses ไม่ใช่ instead (TG087).
Examples ตัวอย่างประโยค
- ผมไม่กินเผ็ด
I don’t eat spicy food. - วันนี้ไม่ร้อน
It isn’t hot today. - เขาไม่อยากไป
He doesn’t want to go. - ฉันไม่เข้าใจ
I don’t understand.
Subtle differences ข้อสังเกต
In everyday speech you will also hear กินไม่เผ็ด ‘eat (food that is) not spicy’, where ไม่ negates the adjective เผ็ด. Both ผมไม่กินเผ็ด and ผมกินไม่เผ็ด are natural.
✗ Unnatural: เขาไม่ครู
✓ Use instead: เขาไม่ใช่ครู / เขาไม่ได้เป็นครู (He isn’t a teacher.)
Why: ไม่ cannot stand directly before a noun. Use ไม่ใช่ or ไม่ได้เป็น.
