Allow or forbid someone to do something
Structure
- S + อนุญาตให้ + person + V (allow someone to: formal)
- S + ไม่อนุญาตให้ + person + V (not allow: formal)
- S + (ไม่)ให้ + person + V (let / not let: everyday)
V (tell someone (not) to)
Usage
อนุญาตให้ means ‘permit, allow’. It is formal and used in rules and official language. In everyday speech, ให้ / ไม่ให้ + person + V is the normal way to say ‘let / not let’.
บอกไม่ให้ means ‘tell someone not to’.
Examples
The teacher doesn’t let the students use their phones. -
Pets are not allowed here.
Mum let me go out with my friends. -
The doctor told me not to eat spicy food.
Subtle differences
- Both หมอบอกไม่ให้กินเผ็ด and หมอบอกให้ไม่กินเผ็ด are heard. ไม่ให้ (‘not let / tell not to’) is the more common and idiomatic order; ให้ไม่ is fine but focuses on the instruction ‘to not eat’.
