“In case”
Structure
- V + (ไว้) + เผื่อ(ว่า) + clause / N (in case)
- V + เผื่อ + person (for someone else as well)
- …, เผื่อ + S + (จะ) + V (maybe, there’s a chance that)
Usage
เผื่อ means ‘(just) in case’. You do something now as a precaution against something that might happen.
Followed by a person, it means doing something for them as well: ซื้อเผื่อน้อง ‘buy some for my sister too’.
After a suggestion, it can mean ‘perhaps, there’s a chance’:
Examples
Take an umbrella in case it rains. -
Write down the number in case you need to get in touch. -
Buy some snacks for your little sister too.
Try asking him. Maybe he knows.
Subtle differences
✗ Unnatural:
(Take an umbrella in case it rains.)
Why: ถ้า makes it a condition (‘take it only if it rains’). A precaution is เผื่อ.
