Structure โครงสร้าง
- ไม่รู้ว่า + clause + หรือเปล่า / ไหม (whether)
- ไม่รู้ว่า + clause with a question word (what, where …)
- ถามว่า + question
Usage การใช้
An embedded question keeps its question form inside the sentence. For yes/no, add หรือเปล่า or ไหม at the end of the clause (‘whether’). For wh-questions, keep the question word in place: ไม่รู้ว่าเขาอยู่ที่ไหน ‘I don’t know where he is.’
Examples ตัวอย่างประโยค
- ไม่รู้ว่าเขาจะมาหรือเปล่า
I don’t know whether he’ll come. - ช่วยถามหน่อยว่าร้านเปิดไหม
Could you ask whether the shop is open? - ผมไม่แน่ใจว่าเขาชื่ออะไร
I’m not sure what his name is. - รู้ไหมว่าสถานีอยู่ที่ไหน
Do you know where the station is?
Subtle differences ข้อสังเกต
- หรือเปล่า and ไหม are both fine. หรือไม่ (TG085) is the formal version: ไม่ทราบว่าจะมาหรือไม่.
